Yoga Off the Mat: I’ve had the opportunity to practice yoga with the sunrise, which is pretty awesome😌. Today my husband shared an article on “The Power of Awe” by Michael Amster, MD, and Jake Eagle, LPC, who remind us that ‘Awe is calming, settling and grounding, and it also activates and awakens us.’ They recommend practicing AWE: pay Attention (focus on something amazing or inspirational), Wait (pause to inhale deeply while being present) and Exhale/Expand (concentrate on whatever feelings or sensations come up). Practicing for just 15 seconds, three times per day, can improve symptoms of depression and anxiety in just a few weeks! Stay tuned for more AWEsome tips! ... See MoreSee Less

Yoga Off tha Mat: as the holidays approach, life can begin to feel more chaotic. Here’s a little Off the Mat Meditation on being the rock (stable, strong, resilient, solid, grounded, unshakable, smooth) in the midst of the waves😌. And by the way, the waves come and go, and they always recede…. ... See MoreSee Less

Yoga Off the Mat: Sometimes what we see on the outside doesn’t reflect what’s going on inside. This huge, strong, ancient tree fell over when there was so much rain. It’s trunk is nearly four feet in diameter, with what appears to be a not-so-big hollow spot in the middle. Upon closer inspection, this tree was completely decaying inside, and I could see sky and trees across the river when I peered inside. Made me thinking that people can be that way, too. “How are you?,” you ask. “Oh, I’m fine. Living the dream. Keep on plugging along,” they say. They look good on the outside, but maybe they’re actually hurting on the inside. Often we don’t really know what challenges someone else is dealing with 🤷♀️ “Compassion is always in Fashion”. ... Yoga Off the Mat: “until you’ve walked a mile in my shoes…” Talking with my 94 year old Mom recently, she said, “You don’t have my life experience.” I agreed that this is true. And I silently thought “you don’t have my life experience either.” I haven’t been in a hot air balloon, she hasn’t jumped out of an airplane. I haven’t raised a family of seven children, sewing their clothes from paper patterns, and she hasn’t sutured someone’s bleeding mouth. She has so much Wisdom, and I’ll never absorb it all. And the truth is, everyone’s life experience is uniquely theirs, AND we all share relatable experiences. Everyone has experienced grief at a loss, whether a loved one, a job, health, community, etc. Everyone experiences joy. Each of us possesses innate wisdom, and we can all learn from each other. Appreciating someone else’s experience is an opportunity to be compassionate and gain new understanding. In that way, we can at least try on their shoes😉🥾😊 ... See MoreSee Less

Yoga Off the Mat: recently my husband and I were having a conversation about why I pursue certain goals and why I post what I post on social media. It’s really a question of purpose.
#1: I have had a few experiences (including a traumatic brain injury at 17 and internal hemorrhaging that was misdiagnosed at 38) that made me reflect on my mortality. Each time, I knew I was given another chance at life because I am called to make a positive difference in this world.
#2: each of us is drawn to the things that we need to nourish, heal and grow.
I study Medicine, yoga, meditation, breathing, Ayurveda, psychology, facilitation, speaking, communication and more because it helps me, and I want to help others. I show up vulnerably and imperfect because part of my purpose is to remind people that they are human. 😌 My purpose is to lift others so that they may empower themselves🤗. If something I share resonates with even one person, it is powerful, meaningful and worthwhile. If what I share doesn’t “land” for you, you have at least two options: scroll on by or comment so that we might explore further. 👍
By the way, what’s YOUR purpose?🤔

Yoga Off the Mat: is your glass half full or half empty?🤔
Yesterday I was leisurely on my way to the office, anticipating a quiet morning with a handful of patients myself, some needed admin time, and a working interview with a new hygienist. 😊 Then I got a call from my work team that the hygienist had not shown up.🤦🏼♀️I chuckled and exhaled…. “Okay, let’s work together to take the best care of our patients.” We went to SOLUTION-focus, rather than PROBLEM-focus. While I didn’t have admin time, we were able to take care of all but one of our scheduled patients (gave them a new appointment). We stayed calm, clear, and Present. 😌 There was no rushing or cutting corners. We focused on the glass half full, on what was possible, and what solutions were available.
The next time a challenge presents, remember that being SOLUTION-focused is a gift to yourself and others😁👍
